How the brain works - Hypnotherapy & Relaxation
When you understand how your brain works, how anger, anxiety, depression, habits, are created then you can begin to understand what you can do about it, how you can cope better, how you can make changes.
The pre-frontal cortex, the bit at the front of your brain, is the bit you know as you. It’s your conscience part. The part that interacts with the world. It’s the part you’re using to read this now. It is attached to a vast intellectual resource, the intellectual mind.
When we operate in this part of the brain, we generally get things right. It takes a proper assessment of the situation and is generally positive and usually gets things right.
There is another part of the brain, the primitive part. The influential bit of this brain is the amydala. This is where we respond with the primitive fight, flight, freeze responses.
It is associated with two other very primitive parts. The hippocampus, which holds all our primitive and sometimes inappropriate patterns of behaviour. And the hypothalamus which regulates chemical responses in the body and mind and sends messages to release the stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, to prepare us for the fight, flight, freeze responses
If our primitive brain thinks, that for one reason or another, our life is in imminent danger it will respond to keep us safe. Anger (fight), anxiety (flight) and depression (freeze) are all modern-day human ways of expressing those primitive immediate responses.
During all the sessions together we explore how the brain works so that you have a much better understanding of why you feel the way you do and more importantly how you can regain control, initially with my guidance and increasingly more independently.
The primitive brain is a negative mind. It will always see things from the worst possible perspective. If you think about, it must for your self-preservation.
It is obsessional.
It is vigilant. If the perception is that danger is all around, then it is wise to stay on red alert.
It globalises and catastrophises.
And, because the primitive brain is not an intellect it can’t be innovative. It must refer to previous patterns of behaviour. If what we did yesterday ensured our survival, then we are encouraged to do it again. This is why we can get stuck in negative patterns of thinking and behaviour.
Sessions with me help you learn this so that you can make positive changes to your life. You’ll learn how negative thinking impacts us and how to learn to think positively, even if the situation is challenging. You’ll learn why sleep is so important to our mental health and how to improve your sleep. You’ll discover that you already have the resources within you to help yourself.
The very fact that you are reading this proves this. When we think something is possible our neurones start to make the axons and dendrites (the links between brain cells) even if we don’t know what it is we need to do. That’s going on in your brain right now.
My skill as a therapist and teacher is to notice what you’re already doing well and to find ways that you recognise these moments so you can do more of them.
When you start noticing what you’re doing well, and do more of it, you create the positive neurotransmitters and hormones that make you feel good, serotonin, oxytocin, dopamine and endorphins.
When we produce a constant flow of these we are happy, coping, brave little souls.
When we’re in the anxious we produce an overload of adrenaline and cortisol, the stress hormones. Great for when you’re in danger but not so good for running our daily lives.
Each week the session will start with forming positive thoughts.
Then we’ll use trance, hypnosis. Trance is very ordinary in many ways. We go into trance many times a day, when we are involved in familiar activities: driving the car, watching tv, out for a walk with the dogs, out for a run, we do it all the time.
Trance is when the two minds come together and focus on the same thing and when we are in that state we have access to the subconscious mind. That’s going to help us enormously and it’s the easiest thing in the world to contrive.
I will use a relaxation followed by positive language patterns to help you both empty your stress bucket and be in a frame of mind to reduce how much you pile in. You will be in full control throughout the trance/relaxation and will feel good at the end.
We will see a difference.
One of my clients described what we do together as ‘very ordinary but with extraordinary results.’
I look forward to speaking with you and helping you to make positive changes for a positive life.
